Kenya: Press Release: Kenya’s Safaricom Introduces Regional Top Up Solution

Mobile phone service provider Safaricom has introduced a PrePay roaming top up service in partnership with other leading networks in the East African region.

The top up solution, which is an expansion of the infamous Kama Kawaida service, allows subscribers to top up with partner networks scratch cards, when traveling within the region.

Subscribers traveling within Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, and using the partner networks, will benefit by being charged their home tariff rates, and will now also use the respective partner network scratchcards to top up.

The service which has been tailored to suit the needs of subscribers, who frequently travel within the East African region, ensures that subscribers no longer need to stock up airtime scratchcards when traveling. The service has been launched in partnership with Vodacom Tanzania, MTN and UTL in Uganda.

“Their calls are not charged as roaming calls. Subscribers travel with their home tariff hence they know exactly how they are charged when they travel. When in Tanzania, subscribers can top up with Vodacom scratch cards and in Uganda they can top up with MTN and UTL scratch cards.” Safaricom Chief Executive Officer Mr Michael Joseph said.

“Safaricom subscribers can now conveniently top up when using the Kama Kawaida service within the East African region. Safaricom is consistently developing innovative products and services that meet subscribers’ needs,” added Joseph.

Previously, Safaricom subscribers have been purchasing Safaricom airtime from the partner networks retail stores, load their phones with enough credit before they travel or ask friends to Sambaza them airtime while traveling.

Kama Kawaida was launched in February 2007. Kama Kawaida allows Safaricom, Vodacom Tanzania, and MTN Uganda customers in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania the opportunity to move freely across the three countries as they would on their home network.

Both PrePay and PostPay subscribers will be able to make both local and international calls, on their home tariff plans, with no roaming charges incurred. In October 2007, the service expanded into Rwanda through a partnership with MTN Rwanda
