South Africa launches Golf Series in Kenya
South African Tourism in partnership with the Kenya Golf Union and Golf Talent Foundation will support golf development in Kenya through a brand new 16-tournament series, to be known as the South Africa Golf Series starting 13 September 2008 at Thika Sports Club.
The South Africa Golf Series was officially launched at Muthaiga Golf Club by His Excellency Tony Msimanga, the High Commissioner to South Africa.
In what is dubbed to be the most exciting golf series to be held in the country for many years, the top prize is a five day golf holiday for the winner and partner to the famous Fancourt Hotel and Country Club Estate, George, Western Cape, South Africa. The prize includes flights on South African Airways and transfers.
Fancourt was host of the 2003 President's Cup, when World Number One Tiger Woods of the US team and Erne Els of the International Team shook hands on the 18th green of the Links Course declaring the match a draw. The Golf Resort has four 18-hole courses and is home to the Fancourt and Ernie Els Golf Foundation, which trains an elite squad of 24 junior golfers, both girls and boys.
To be played throughout the country in 15 golf clubs, the South Africa Golf Series will climax in a National Final to be hosted at Windsor Golf and Country Club on 28 March 2009. Eight golfers will qualify per venue, with a guaranteed ninth place for the Best Lady, should none qualify.
Speaking on the partnership with Kenya Golf Union, South African Tourism's East Africa Trade Relations Manager, Hulisani Thabela said "Our entry into golf will give our trade partners the opportunity to meet with key business and industry people who wish to visit South Africa for business or leisure".
Entry fee will be Shs 1,000/- of which 70% will go to the Golf Talent Foundation, chaired by Royal Nairobi golfer and business entrepreneur, Patrick Musimba.
