Athi River Mining Ltd Applies for New Licenses The third largest cement manufacturer in Kenya, Athi River Mining td, has applied for two special licenses to prospect for raw material for the production of cement. The two licenses are for prospecting in Mwingi District of Eastern Province and Garissa District f North Eastern Province. In a move clearly set on gaining market share from the two dominant cement manufacturers, Bamburi Cement and East Africa Portland Cement, Athi River Mining is preparing to increase its production capacity. Athi River Mining has a processing plant in Kaloleni in coast Province and has an average production capacity of 300,000 tonnes of cement. 3. Air Service Licenses Over twenty airlines and air charters have applied for various air service licenses from the Director General, Kenya Civil Aviation Authority. Among the applicants are Austrian Airlines, who have applied for a charter license to ferry clients from Vienna to Mombasa. Others are the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) that has applied for non-scheduled air service for passengers within Kenya using aircraft based at Wilson Airport. All the application license are connected to the tourism industry, which indicates that even though the industry is still struggling with the fallout of the political violence in early 2008, tourist volumes are still high enough, and are expected to recover, to make airline operations attractive.
