24 November 2008 – Kenya Orient Insurance Limited (KOIL) has launched insurance scratch cards service through which its customers will be able to purchase the personal accident cover, Safari Bima.
Kenya Orient becomes the first insurance company to launch scratch cards for insurance products following the successful launch of Safari Bima into the market recently. Safari Bima is a personal accident cover that is subscribed through an SMS service charged at KES30 and entitles one to a cover of KES100,000
Speaking during the launch of the Safari Bima scratch card at a Nairobi hotel, Ms Virginia Magondu Acting CEO of Kenya Orient Insurance Ltd (KOIL) said, “The launch of Safari Bima scratch cards marks a new beginning for Kenyans.” “The scratch card is the result of the valuable feedback we received from our customers some of whom preferred a personal accident cover that lasts longer than the 24 hour period. This improvement will also enable consumers have proof of purchase. The cards can be purchased from any of the Kenya Orient branches or agents countrywide,” continues Ms Magondu.
The scratch cards are available in two denominations, one for KES160 which lasts for a week and KES700 which lasts for a month. Subscribers will enjoy a personal accident cover to the tune of KES100,000 for a period of not less than a week. Kenya Orient is also in negotiation with other stakeholders to make the cards available at all possible outlets.
The Safari Bima scratch cards work like the regular mobile phone top up card. Once you purchase the card, you gently scratch on the panel at the back of the card to reveal the secret pin number. Clients will be required to sms the PIN number # national ID number # beneficiary phone number to 0738 99 8808.
Immediately after sending the message the client will get a reply SMS confirming how long the cover will be depending on the value of scratch card purchased. A message will also be sent automatically to the beneficiary’s mobile number notifying them of their selection as a beneficiary.
Ms Magondu added “We are delighted at the response we have received since the launch of Safari Bima late September this year and KOIL is committed to improve on its product offering that will see our client base expand and I believe we are fast becoming the insurance provider of choice in the region.”
Safari Bima provides a distinct advantage as it can be accessed anywhere, anytime. Speaking during the same function, Titus K Muya, the Chairman of Kenya Orient, added that KOIL is committed to making insurance accessible and affordable for the masses and will keep on improving on its product offering to empower more people to access insurance.
