27 November 2008 --- yu, Kenya’s newest mobile network from Econet Wireless Kenya went live today in Nairobi, ushering registered subscribers to the community. Chief Executive Officer and Director of yu Michael Foley said that the network had been switched on for users in line with the company’s promise to deliver the service by the end of November 2008. “So far we have invested KES100m in the service and after a rigorous testing process with all other service providers are convinced that it is officially ready for use from today,” said Foley. Foley welcomed all Kenyans to the new service reiterating that it would offer unmatched clarity and efficiency for voice calls. “Most people still use the mobile phone to call and send text messages and the yu network will give them the best experience they could have from a cellular service. We have built a robust network that has taken our future expansion into consideration,” he added.
Noting that there was a steady rise in the demand for mobile phones and modems with a strong data transmission capability and in particular surfing the internet, Foley observed that the yu services would be simple to use and affordable.
In addition, he promised that Kenyans will soon be seeing products and services that have not been seen in this market before and which will make using the mobile phone a richer experience. “We are also setting up an expansive customer care center that will take care of our customers’ needs”, he added.
At service launch, the new network offers high speed data and voice services. Foley added that the network was unique because its base stations were connected to each by a fibre optic cable ensuring that there was no interference at all. This, he said, was also in readiness for the offshore fibre cable, which is currently being laid under the Indian Ocean and will connect Kenya to the rest of the digital world.
Nairobi and its environs are immediately served while Mombasa will follow closely within a month. The rest of the country is scheduled to be covered by the end of the first quarter of 2009.
