Monday, 1 December 2008 --- The leading communications service provider Safaricom has launched a preferential roaming tariff rate for subscribers traveling to South Africa.
The preferential tariff rate for subscribers roaming on Vodacom network will also be applicable for those calling South Africa from Kenya.
It will allow both PrePay and PostPay Safaricom subscribers to call friends, relatives and business associates back home or in South Africa for only KES30 per minute. This represents 25% price reduction on the previous rates. With increasing number of Kenyans traveling and living in South Africa, Safaricom continues to record a growing number of subscribers, who are either roaming within, or making calls to South Africa as well as calling back home.
“The preferential tariff rate will make it cheaper and convenient for our subscribers who frequently travel to South Africa to communicate freely within South Africa as well as with their fellow Kenyans back home. Safaricom PostPay subscribers will also no longer need to pay roaming deposit to enjoy this service on Vodacom network in South Africa,” Safaricom Chief Executive Officer Mr Michael Joseph said.
The partnership between Safaricom and Vodacom South Africa is very strategic considering that South Africa will host the largest football extravaganza, the 2010 World Cup in the next 19 months, in which many Kenyans are expected to attend given the sumptuous travel packages that local travel agencies have began to offer.
In September this year, Safaricom further enhanced the Kama Kawaida service by introducing a PrePay Regional Top Up solution in partnership with leading mobile service providers in the East African region.
The top up solution allows subscribers to top up with partner networks scratch cards, when traveling within the East Africa region. Subscribers traveling within Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda, and using the partner networks, benefit by being charged their home tariff rates, and now are able to use the respective partner network scratch cards to top up.
The service which has been tailored to suit the needs of subscribers who frequently travel within the East African Region, ensures that subscribers no longer need to stock up airtime scratch cards when traveling. The service was launched in partnership with Vodacom Tanzania, MTN and UTL Uganda, and MTN Rwanda.
