In this issue: Appointments to Export Promotion Council, Kenya National Trading Corporation, Industrial and Commercial Development Corporation, and Kenya Wine Agencies Limited, and levies for media houses and journalists operating in Kenya.

New Appointments
The immediate former Minister of Trade, currently the Minister of Finance and Deputy Prime Minister, Uhuru Kenyatta, has appointed Shadrack Manga to be a member of the board of the Export Promotion Council (EPC) for a period of three years. The EPC develops and promotes Kenya’s trade exports trade. Established in 1992, EPC’s primary objective was to address bottlenecks that were facing exporters and producers of export goods and services with a view to increasing the performance of the export sector. Today, the EPC co-ordinates and harmonises export development and promotion activities in the country.

The Deputy Prime Minister and immediate former Trade Minister has also appointed Ronald Njoroge King’ang’i, Ali Wario, Musili Mutooni Nzambu and Thomas Oigara Okongo to be members of the board of Kenya National Trading Corporation for three years.

Formed in 1965, the Kenya National Trading Corporation is a private limited company fully owned by the Kenyan government whose principal mandate is to organise and effect exports from and imports into Kenya of goods and commodities that the corporation may from time to time decide.

Kenyatta also appointed Albert Ruturi as a member of the of the board of the Industrial and Commercial Development Corporation for a period of three years, and David Mburu Githere and George Kuria Murathe to the board of Kenya Wine Agencies Limited (KWAL) for a period of three years.

Levies in Respect of Media Enterprises Operating in Kenya

The Media Council of Kenya has given notice of levies payable by all media enterprises operating in Kenya with effect from 1 January 2009:

Large media houses having five or more media outlets with regional reach and or high power frequency with a regional reach, will pay KES150,000 per month. Large media houses with national reach only will pay KES100,000 per month.

Medium houses, those that have two to four media outlets or medium power frequency, will pay KES75,000 per month and micro media houses with two media outlets or low power frequency will pay KES50,000.

Small media houses with one media outlet will pay KES20,000 and small media houses with one media outlet and frequency radius of 40km will pay KES10,000.

Magazine publishers will pay KES10,000 while foreign media houses operating in Kenya will pay an annual subscription fee of KES30,000.

All payments are to be made quarterly to the Media Council of Kenya. According to the council, media outlets are newspapers, radio station or a television station.

Subscriptions in Respect to All Journalists Operating in Kenya

The Media Council of Kenya has given its notice of subscription fees payable by all journalists operating in Kenya with effect from 1 January 2009.

Local journalists and correspondents will pay KES 2000 per annum while foreign journalists operating in Kenya will pay KES10,000 per annum. Foreign journalists on short term assignments of up to three months will pay KES5,000.

Upon receipt of levy, the journalists name will be entered into a register and updated annually by the Media Council.
