Nairobi, 5 May 2009 --- The submarine fibre optic cable expected in Kenya in June will give a much needed boost to tourism. With the cable providing increased broadband and greater online access at a reduced cost, it is predicted that marketing and e-commerce transactions will grow dramatically. This presents tremendous opportunities for the business sector and tourism across East Africa. With recent polls from eyefortravel, a leading research company on internet focused travel, suggesting that seven out of ten travellers use the internet as their primary source of travel information, and with almost half of the planet’s travel being distributed and booked online, it is crucial that the tourism sector across East Africa invests in online marketing and management. Mr Damian Cook, the CEO of E Tourism Africa explains, “Online sales have been one of the few sectors to experience growth despite the global recession. Travel is now the number one selling commodity online and is generating over USD110bn annually in sales. However, very little African tourism is sold online and finding and booking African destinations on the web can be a challenge. It is hoped that with more education and awareness, the tourism sector in the region will harness and implement online marketing tools”, said Cook. E Tourism Africa, announced today that a series of two-day training seminars on online tourism management and marketing will take place in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda from the 18 May to the 5 June 2009 to help the sector understand and leverage the online opportunities. Following the success of the first international E Tourism East Africa Conference held in Nairobi last year, the E Tourism East Africa Seminars, which are being sponsored by Safaricom, Visa, Coca-Cola and Microsoft, will include presentations from some of the world’s leading experts on online tourism, including Expedia, the largest online travel agent in the world. The seminars will explain the benefits of online payments and e-commerce and will also introduce real business solutions for tourism companies that may be struggling with reservation and booking systems. Safaricom, the title sponsor of the event, said the company had a very strong commitment to tourism and wants the sector to explore all the opportunities available, especially online. “There has been a marked increase of tourists booking online and it is extremely critical that the tourism sector across East Africa begins to market and do business online. We hope that the E Tourism East Africa Seminars will be a wake up call to the sector to focus online”, said Wangari Murugu, Head of Marketing and Communication. Visa, a lead sponsor of the seminars, said: “With so many products and services being purchased online today, we want to ensure that the tourism sector knows the value and benefits of accepting online payments. We also want to highlight the importance of managing secure payments online,” said Nick Essame, Head of Innovative Payments, for Sub-Saharan Africa at Visa. Over 700 delegates across the region are expected to attend the E Tourism East Africa Seminars and as well as educating and exposing the delegates to the new world of online and digital media, social networking and Web 2.0, the seminars will give delegates great business and networking opportunities. The two-day E Tourism seminars provide certified training from professional international trainers and guest presentations from New Mind, Expedia, Nightsbridge, Visa International, Trip Advisor and many more. Sessions include website development, e-commerce, online reservations and bookings, working with partners, e-marketing, multimedia, Web 2.0 marketing, user generated content, social networks, mobile marketing and much more. A special “Recession Proofing” session will also be included on how to use technology to reduce wasteful marketing costs and target the best value customers.
