Nairobi, 18 June 2009 --- Digital leader LG Electronics credited for inventing the touch screen mobile phone technology launched the next level of touch screen technology handsets. The new range of touch screen handsets dubbed “Touch The Wonder” are: Renoir KC910, the first touch screen phone with 8 megapixels camera, Arena KM900, the first touch screen phone with 3D S-class user interface, and Cookie KP500 touch screen phone with motion censor games and handwriting/editing.
Each phone in the range has a unique technological feature never experienced before on a touch screen phone the most outstanding being the 3D S-class user interface on Arena KM900. The range of handsets are extremely affordable though advanced in technology. LG says it will be investing in marketing communication to enhance consumer understanding of the next generation of touch screen technology phones and its usage conveniences.
The phones are HSDPA/UMTS/EDGE/GPRS network enabled, making more Kenyans to take advantage of faster and cheaper internet access following the landing of The East African Submarine Systems (TEAMS) cable once it is operationalised.
Speaking during the launch of the phones, visiting LG Middle East & Africa Regional CEO Mr. Ki Wan Kim said the advanced phones will be retailing at all Safaricom retail centres countrywide and major mobile phone outlets at competitive prices starting today. At the same time, Mr. Kim hailed telecommunications provider Safaricom for reducing prices on all mobile phone handsets retailing at their shops, which include LG. He further commended the government for removing VAT on mobile handsets saying the move will help lock out counterfeits and increase mobile phone penetration in Kenya.
“The removal of VAT on mobile phones will make genuine quality handsets more affordable to Kenyan consumers thus locking out counterfeits. At LG, we will compliment this move by providing a range of phone at competitive prices against their respective features,” he said. “LGE will also be keenly focused on communication oriented handsets to enable Kenyan consumers fully utilize the potential of fibre optic cable that will make internet access affordable and at faster speeds,” Mr. Kim added. He stressed the company’s commitment towards strengthening its portfolio of touch screen phones by introducing a variety of handsets to suit every Kenyan market segment.
Mr. Kim also announced that LG was in the process of setting up a customer care centre in Nairobi at a cost of KES7.9m (USD100,000). The facility, which will become operational by August this year, is meant to help sort out consumer inquiries on sales and support concerning all LG range of products.
