Uganda: Press Releases: Zain, Western Union Finalize ZAP Agreement

Kampala, 10 August 2009 – Teams from Zain Uganda and Western Union have today put a seal on an agreement that will see mobile money transfer services made possible through Zain's new Zap mobile commerce platform in Uganda. This is part of a partnership agreement that was signed in June 2009 between Zain Group and Western Union Worldwide.

Flanked by Gail Galuppo, Western Union’s Executive Vice-president and Chief Marketing Officer, Zain Uganda’s Managing Director, Yesse Oenga said the team was in Uganda to discuss the partnership that was agreed by Western Union worldwide and Zain Group.

The partnership, which was first announced in June 2009, will eventually enable Zain customers enrolled on the ZAP service to receive their money in cash at a western Union Agent location near them or in accounts ties to their mobile “wallets”.

Addressing a press conference this afternoon, Mr. Oenga explained that the Western Union service with Zain will also eventually see Zain ZAP customers able to access the service through the Western Union outlets countrywide. “This service will enhance the ZAP service to be more accessible to Zain customers in Uganda because of the Western Union footprint across the country. In the near future Zain ZAP customers will be able to receive money sent from their friends and families sent through the Western Union service found worldwide in 202 countries.”

Speaking at the press conference, Ms Galuppo said, “The ability to move money with a mobile phone is changing the landscape of financial services. We look forward to connecting Western Union’s global network with the Zap platform to extend services throughout Uganda.”

The press conference was also attended by Alain Honliasso, Western Union’s Marketing Director for Africa, Debi Buckley, Western Union’s Strategic Director-Digital and Experiential Marketing Director, Levi Nyakundi, Zain Uganda’s Marketing Manager Consumer and Payphones, George Buza, Zain Uganda’s Marketing Manager Mobile Data, Multimedia and Messaging, as well as Angela Kenyonza, Zain’s M-Commerce Manager.
