Nairobi, 16 August 2009 --- The Aviation & Allied Workers Union (AAWU) has called off their strike after reaching an amicable agreement with Kenya Airways management following a meeting held yesterday.
The meeting that brought together the management and AAWU under the conciliation of the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE), and the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) agreed on a return to work formula which includes among other things an interim wage award of 10% for the first year and 10% for the second year – a total of 20% for the review period.
In addition all dismissal and show-cause letters issued to employees relating to the strike, and any cases in court against the union officials and other staff brought up by Kenya Airways related to the strike will be withdrawn. The parties have also agreed that there will be no victimization on either side. Further all staff will be required to resume duty by 6:00PM on Sunday, 16 August 2009.
The contents of the return to work formula will be incorporated in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) once all the contentious issues are resolved by the two parties.
AAWU therefore appeals to all its members to go back to work as agreed. Kenya Airways has been holding Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations with AAWU since 9 April 2009. The main purpose of these negotiations has been to review terms and conditions of its staff who are AAWU members.
