15 September 2009 --- DuPont Safety Resources (DSR) has identified East Africa’s manufacturing, petrochemicals, mining and agriculture sectors as those that are in dire need of safety expertise, in order for the region’s economy to grow.

According to these global experts in operational excellence and safety for business and institutions, a number of the region’s businesses do not comply with certified safety procedures. In turn, their output is affected and unnecessary losses on the bottom line are created.

DSR is part of DuPont de Nemours and Company, a leading global science company, founded in 1802. The company is known to put science to work by creating sustainable solutions, which are essential to a better, safer and healthier life for people worldwide.

Studies show that organizations in East Africa tend to be in a reactive mode, where there is little or no management commitment to safety issues.

According to Carlman Moyo, DuPont’s Regional Director for the Sub-Saharan Africa, “safety is left to supervision. And, once the supervisor has left the location, workers go back to their normal behavior, which does not necessarily comply with safety guidelines. So, even though some safety initiatives are in place, they are not sustainable. The key lies in workforce buy-in; and a comprehensive understanding of each stakeholder’s role and responsibilities in the safety process”.

Moyo believes that losses from incidences, such as downtime from machines lying idle due to injuries and accidents, could be avoided if proper safety guidelines are instituted, followed and maintained. “As DuPont, we can assist line managers to fully understand their role and responsibilities in safety; and equip them with the necessary skills to improve workforce engagement,” says Moyo.

Moyo says that companies, which has partnered with DSR on operational excellence and safety procedures had registered dramatic improvements in savings in operational costs, as well as indirect costs caused by incidents, such as fatalities and stoppages.

Moyo is in Kenya to engage members of the local business community. He was speaking at an event that DSR hosted for members of the Kenya Association of Manufactures (KAM), of whom most fall into industries where lifting, movement of goods and people put workers at risk.

During the event, DSR disclosed its core strategies and benefits. These are based on skills and knowledge that has been acquired over the 200 hundred years of DuPonts’ existence, and from within it’s over 500 operational sites and plants, globally.

DSR believes that a culture change in embracing safety initiatives, in any operation, is based on management’s commitment to safety issues itself. Once management commitment is visible, the safety culture will start filtering down to the rest of the workforce.

According to Rene Hulleman, DSR Regional Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa, the company tailor-makes its safety solutions – they are developed through assessing an organisation’s current safety state. This is then benchmarked against global industry standards and best practice; where after a future state is envisioned. Once there is concurrence as to where the organisation would like to be, a roadmap is developed and activities implemented so as to achieve the desired change.

“We don’t go in and take over an organisation’s safety programmes. Instead, we engage with them and assist them to develop their own safety initiatives. Because the organisation is instrumental in developing its own internalised solution, they are more likely to take ownership. A more sustainable programme is created,” says Hulleman.

Moyo added that DSR had now developed a focused approach to cater for the region’s specific needs. This is in line with DuPont’s enhanced growth, within Africa, which is driven by a great demand for organisational assistance with safety improvement programmes, in all industries.
