Tuesday, 28 September 2009 --- Zain customers can now send money to other telecommunications networks following the interlinking of the Zap service with other providers. Announcing the development today, Zain Kenya Managing Director Rene Meza said the cross-network service will expand the reach of the m-commerce service as the company moves to reach the 80% of Kenya’s population who do not have access to formal banking services.
“Zap is founded on the principle of innovation and flexibility. We would like to ensure that our customers are able to transact business conveniently,” said Mr. Meza. He disclosed that customers will be charged the standard KES10 for cross network money transfer transactions and noted that the success currently enjoyed by the Zap service was largely due to its affordability and reliability. Non-Zain customers will be required to withdraw money received from Zap agents or Zain centres countrywide.
Last week Zain enhanced features on the Zap platform thus enabling customers to swiftly and securely receive money from any bank account around the world and easily send money to any bank in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Apart from transferring money, Zap customers can now manage their bank accounts, pay for goods and services and settle their utility bills and also top up mobile telephone airtime. The Zap service is included as part of Zain’s pioneering ‘One Network’ service, meaning that customers are now able to manage their Zap accounts even while away from the home country. Mr. Meza said Zain is engaged in talks with several partners countrywide to offer payment solutions for various utilities in a bid to increase the uptake of mobile commerce in the country. Currently Zain customers can pay their KPLC and DSTV through the Zap service.
