Johannesburg, 11 November 2009 –-- Standard Bank Group was named Africa’s Bank of the Year by leading international investment research group Africa Investor at its 2009 Investment and Business Leader Awards ceremony held in Cape Town recently.
The Africa Investor Investment and Business Leader Awards recognise exceptional business practices, economic achievement and investments across Africa.
The Standard Bank Group’s long-standing involvement in African finance and its deep expertise across the continent were further recognised with Standard Bank scooping two awards in the Africa Investor Infrastructure Awards.
The Infrastructure Awards are made annually alongside the Africa Investor Infrastructure Projects Summit and are designed to profile exceptional business practices and economic achievements across the infrastructure spectrum in Africa. They recognise innovative projects and reward the personalities driving transactions and improving the continent’s infrastructure investment climate.
“We are delighted to be recognized in this way. Standard Bank’s early moves to engage meaningfully across Africa were founded on the conviction that the continent’s potential to develop itself would gather significant momentum over time. We are now seeing stronger indications of the realization of this potential,” says Clive Tasker, Chief Executive Standard Bank Africa.
“It has been particularly pleasing for us to have been positioned to extend and deepen our involvement in a manner that has been responsible and mutually beneficial for the many African countries where we have a strong presence. I believe that the Standard Bank Group remains well-placed to grow its partnerships with African institutions and businesses,” he says.
For the Infrastructure Awards, Nigeria’s Stanbic IBTC Bank, a member of the Standard Bank Group, was named as Public Private Partnership Champion of the Year in recognition of its success in forging successful public-private partnerships. Standard Bank and ICBC, its Chinese partner and strategic shareholder, won the Bank Arranger of the Year Award.
Richard Gush, Standard Bank Africa Chief Executive for CIB says development and modernization of Africa’s infrastructure remains one of the prime leverage points for the continent’s continued growth and status as an equal trading partner with other emerging regions.
“Standard Bank’s business across Africa has deep roots and we are pleased to be recognized for specific projects and engagements. More importantly, we believe awards of this nature help signpost Africa’s continuing recovery and signal the growing availability of tremendous opportunities for investors,” he says.
