Ah the irony – the fabled new fibreoptic cable hasn't even had the time to unfurl and the rug got pulled out underneath of it already: Fibre away for all you want, but don't look to KPLC to give you power for your computer and modem. Ostensibly, the power shortage is caused by the lack of rains that reduced hydropower generation. Why a drought is being treated as a once-in-a-lifetime event that everyone in government stares at with utterly wide-eyed surprise is beyond me, though. While I was still thinking about the effect of the extensive power rationing means on all the small companies that cannot afford a generator – people who have already had a major knock from high consumer price inflation and the overall slowdown in the economy-, Dr Alfred Mutua rose to new heights: I've often spent interminable hours in traffic along the highway and admired the hibiscus, oleander and other plants for so valiantly growing in the middle of noise and dust and exhaust fumes. Off with their heads is what they get for their effort. Of course I'm familiar with the Broken Window theory, but it makes absolutely no sense to rip up all the vegetation (including freshly planted flower beds) and replace it with ‘riot-ready rocks'. How about getting some City Council gardeners to do a bit of weeding and trimming? Keeps the plants happy, the shrubbery at a safe height, the air quality up and the tax payer smiling. Three words: Rome . Burning. And also fiddling. Either someone somewhere urgently needed to be rewarded with a new ‘beautification' contract – or Dr Mutua is truly the grandmaster of political satire. A possibility I wouldn't rule out entirely since this looks like it has come straight out of the TheOnion.com. Enjoy Dr Mutua's pretty pebbles. 18 August 2009 Comments (0)
