Uganda: Press Releases: Nakumatt Boosts Kampala City Environmental Management Plans

Kampala, 9 February 2010 --- As part of its regional market development plans Regional retailer Nakumatt Holdings has as joined forces with the Kampala City Council (KCC) to facilitate a solid waste management project by the council. The partnership launched in Kampala City on Monday by Uganda’s Minister of Water and Environment Hon. Maria Mutagamba, is geared at combating urban littering through the provision of environmental litter bins.

Over the last one year, Nakumatt has invested more than USD2m in specific initiatives geared at ensuring environmental conservation in Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. And as the KCC moves to improve the image of Kampala city renown as the Pearl City of Africa, Nakumatt Holdings has donated more than 60 new litterbins to be erected in various locations within the city as part of a public sensitization project on urban environmental management.

Speaking during the launch of the project at Oasis Mall, Mutagamba explained that the Ugandan government was moving to upscale its public-private partnership programs as part of its overall national development blueprint.

While welcoming Nakumatt’s support, Mutagamba noted that the partnership will help supplement the governments and KCC’s efforts to facilitate environmental conservation while reflecting the status of Kampala as the Capital City of Uganda. “Nakumatt has only be around for less than a year and I’m informed they have invested over USD2m in specific initiatives that focus on environmental conservation in East Africa and I believe this is a clear indication that the company gives serious priority to cleanliness and the need for a good and healthy environment” she said.

Nakumatt Holdings Managing Director Mr Atul Shah in a speech read on his behalf by the firm’s Marketing and Corporate Affairs Manager Justus Nyaga disclosed that the company had adopted a firm to extend the benefits of environmental conservation to the general public in all the markets that the firm operates in. “At Nakumatt we hold high the need for a clean, healthy and friendly environment as a requisite for our business and we feel obligated to involve not only our customers but the general public as well.” Shah said, adding: “As a player in the local and regional retail industry, we are committed to engaging in a culture shift amongst our customers. We also welcome the government’s strategic plans to conserve the environment and we’ll be happy to partner with the Ministry of Water and Environment on particular initiatives geared at promoting environmental conservation.”

Nakumatt Oasis situated at the ultra modern Oasis Mall opened its doors to the public in April last year ushering in the 24 hour shopping experience which has become popular and has been replicated by several other players in the market. Regionally, Nakumatt Holdings currently have 21 stores in Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda making it the largest retail chain in the region.
