Nairobi, 5 July 2011 – Leading Charter Airline Company, Freedom Airline Express has announced plans to launch scheduled flights from Wilson Airport to Wajir town in a bid to explore emerging business opportunities in Northern Kenya. The inaugural flight is set to take off on 1 August 2011 and will be made twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays. The flights will be in addition to two weekly flights to Mandera town, which the airline launched months ago.
Freedom Airline CEO, Mr. Mahad Abshir says the airline reached the decision to schedule regular flights to Wajir after numerous flights to the northern town proved worthwhile registering impressive passenger numbers.
“After the first two flights which were fully booked in advance, we decided to further explore the option of scheduled flights to Wajir town. We are currently flying twice to Mandera and have plans to increase the frequency to three times a week,” said Mr. Abshir.
The airline, which operates at Wilson airport with a turboprop aircraft, is planning to increase its fleet in a bid to enhance its capacity to meet the rising demand in both passenger and cargo transport.
The announcement comes in the wake of increased tourist numbers with most airlines operating in full capacity. These, against the escalating fuel costs and the biting inflationary rates. The airline remains upbeat that there are good prospects in the foreseeable future even with the introduction of the county governments.
“There are lots of opportunities in some of this marginalized towns and with the new form of devolved governance, we anticipate rapid development in these areas. As an airline, we’re looking at playing our role in facilitating development through providing fast and reliable transport for both cargo and passengers and also increase our bottom-line,” said Mr. Abshir.
The airline has also intimated that there are plans to introduce a product for the Muslim community ahead of the holy month of Ramadan set to be celebrated this August.
